STEVE JOBS and the BUTTERFLY EFFECT

Last class we listened to a TED Talk. It is STEVE JOB giving a Commencement Address at Stanford University.   In fact, the talk was not prepared as a “TED talk”, but TED organization took the video and presented it as part of their talks.

The following is what strikes me the most is the “butterfly effect” Steve Job talks about in his lecture:

In the “second story- love and cost”, Steve Job explains that after the moment he created a successful company, he received a dismissal note and had to leave it at once.  But it was precisely because that situation occurred that he was able, later on, to return to the company.  He was by then out of Apple, and because of that, he was blessed with getting to know his beloved partner.  Therefore:  sad facts can contribute to creating the conditions for venturous events. Every fact has its effect on the destiny.  Our life is not already designed. Everything can change, according to different facts that appear to be futile at present.

This “butterfly effect” is particularly meaningful for me, at the life stage I am going through right now:  my son is ill, we have to take care of him and my previous complex and perfect world seems to be tearing into pieces.   Nevertheless, every lesson my son and I learn in these his difficult times will certainly be fruitful in future. That is my hope. Just like Steve Jobs:  we suffer right now, but there is the possibility of a venturous future, with God’s help.

  1. Adela, I think the same as you! No one would like to live a difficult situation. However, when we are facing difficult situations, they make us have the strength to face them, withstand them and then overcome them. Once, the situation is no longer a difficult one, we have already overcome the worst part and we will fortunately learn something. I am sure when we overcome all type of problems, we will appreaciate more the things we have.

  2. Hi Ade, I also think that every thing that happens to us might open new doors for other things or opportunities in life. Even from diseases we can learn. for example, to appreciate life even more.Once, I had a terrible car accident and I came out of that without a single scar. from that moment on my attitude to life has changed for the better. Let´s all enjoy our lives! even though it is hard at times!! let´s all be strong and face difficulties. It´s worth it!

  3. There is always the possibility of a better future, that is what your precise words are telling me. Every event in our lives has a meaning and an outcome, no matter how small or shallow it may seem. By expressing your feelings on words, you are not only helping me to understand why certain things happen, but to every one who reads this. Thanks Adela, and thanks for sharing your writing talent!

  4. I agree with you Ade. And I believe the most important thing we can do in moments like these is to have faith. Although sometimes we get angry and we think life is unfair, I think that everything happens for a reason and from each situation we can learn and get stronger. As you know, I admire you very much and I think you're one of the strongest women I have met, so continue like that! Take care!
